James Owen Sullivan, the drummer with California band Avenged Sevenfold, was found dead on Monday, according to police. He was 28.
Sullivan was found "unresponsive" in his Huntington Beach home, according to Orange County deputy coroner Mitchell Sigal.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine cause of death.

Throw yourself into intimacy. Go ahead, take a leap on love.

Psychologists tell us we're born afraid of just two things. The first is loud noises. Do you recall the second? Most people guess "abandonment" or "starvation," but neonatal dread was simpler than that: It was the fear of falling. Today we all have a much richer array of consternations, but I'll bet falling is still on your list. Why give up the prudent concern that brought your whole genetic line into the world clutching anything your tiny fists could grab? Fear of falling is your birthright! Perhaps that's why most of us, at least some of the time (and some of us most of the time), are frightened by another deeply primal experience: intimacy. Allowing yourself to become emotionally close is the psychological equivalent of skidding off a cliff; hence the expression "falling in love."

This gauzy phrase usually describes a sexual connection. But love has infinite variations that can swallow the floor from under your feet at any moment. You're securely installed in a relationship, marching through life, keeping your nasal hairs decently trimmed. Then boom! You hear a song and know that the composer has seen into your soul. Or you wake up, bleary with jet lag, in a city you've never seen before and feel you've come home. Or the wretched little mess of a kitten you just saved from drowning begins to purr in your arms. Suddenly—too late—you realize that your heart has opened like a trapdoor, and you're tumbling into a deep, sweet abyss, thinking, God, this is wonderful! God, this is terrible!The next time this happens, here's a nice, dry, scientific fact to dig your toes into: The sensation you're feeling is probably associated with decreased activity in the brain region that senses our bodies' location in the physical world. When this zone goes quiet, the boundary between "self" and "not self" disappears. It isn't just that we feel close to the object of our affection; perceiving ourselves as separate isn't an option. Some being that was Other now matters to us as much as we matter to ourselves. Yet we have no control over either the love or the beloved. The horror! The horror! We focus attention on stories about people, from Othello and Huckleberry Finn to the lusty physicians on Grey's Anatomy, who trip into versions of intimacy (passion, friendship, parental protectiveness) they can neither escape nor manage. These stories teach us why we both fear and long for intimacy, and why our ways of dealing with it are usually misguided. Two of these methods are so common, they're worth a warning here.
Bad Idea #1: Guard Your Heart
There's an old folktale about a giant who removes his own heart, locks it in a series of metal boxes, and buries the whole conglomeration. Thereafter, his enemies can stab or shoot him, but never fatally. Of course, he also loses the benefits of having a heart, such as happiness. The giant sits around like Mrs. Lincoln grimly trying to enjoy the play, until he's so miserable he digs up his heart and stabs it himself. This grisly parable reminds us that refusing to love is emotional suicide. Yet many of us fight like giants to guard ourselves from intimacy, boxing up our hearts in steel-hard false beliefs. "I'm unlovable" is one such lockbox. "Everyone wants to exploit me" is another. Then there's "I shouldn't feel that" and "I have to follow the rules," etc. Whatever your own heart-coffins may be, notice that they're ruining your happiness, not preserving it. As poet Mary Oliver puts it, Listen, are you breathing just a little, and calling it a life?… For how long will you continue to listen to those dark shouters, caution and prudence? Fall in! Fall in!If you've buried your heart to keep it from hurting, you're hurting. You're also in dire danger of using…
Bad Idea #2: Control Your Beloved
"If you don't love me, I'll kill myself. If you stop loving me, I'll kill you." Some people believe such statements are expressions of true intimacy. Actually, they're weapons of control, which destroy real connection faster than you can say "restraining order." Though few of us are this radically controlling, we often use myriad forms of manipulation and coercion. We can say, "Sure, whatever makes you happy," in a tone that turns this innocuous phrase into a vicious blow. To the extent that we try to make anyone do, feel, or think anything—whether our weapon is people-pleasing, sarcasm, or a machete—we trade intimacy for microterrorism. So, if neither control nor avoidance works, what does?

Good Idea #1: Be Willing
In The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams reveals the secret of flying. Just launch yourself toward the ground, and miss. "All it requires is simply the ability to throw yourself forward with all your weight, and the willingness not to mind that it's going to hurt…if you fail to miss the ground. Most people fail to miss the ground, and if they are really trying properly, the likelihood is that they will fail to miss it fairly hard." This is the best advice I know for coping with fear of intimacy. Avoidance and control can't keep our hearts from falling, or cushion the landing. Why not try throwing yourself forward, being willing not to mind that it's going to hurt? Please note: "Being willing not to mind" isn't the same as genuinely not minding. You'll mind the risks of intimacy—count on it. Be willing anyway. How? Simply allow your feelings—all of them—into full consciousness. Articulate your emotions. Write about them in a journal, tell them to a friend, confess them to your priest, therapist, cab driver. Feel the full extent of your love, your thirst, your passion, without holding back or grasping at anything or anyone (especially not the object of your affection). The next suggestion will show you how.

Good Idea #2: Go "Woo-hoo"
Author Melody Beattie took up skydiving and was scared senseless. Another diver told her, "When you get to the door and jump, say 'Woo-hoo!' You can't have a bad time if you do." This phrase works as well when you're falling emotionally as when you're falling physically. When fear hits, when you want to grasp or hide, shout "Woo-hoo!" instead. While there is never—not ever—a sure foundation beneath our feet, the willingness to celebrate what we really feel can turn falling into flying. You don't need an airplane to practice woo-hoo skills. For instance: I'm writing these words at 2:15 in the morning, because writing, like other intimate pursuits, often occurs at night. As I type each word, I come to care about how it will be read—about you, there, reading it. Caring is scaring. It makes me want to stop right now, or spend years composing something flawlessly literate. Unfortunately, my deadline was yesterday, and Shakespeare I ain't, so…woo-hoo! Now it's 2:20 a.m. My writing partner, a fat, aged beagle named Cookie, snores contentedly at my feet. I'm revisited by a worry that was born the day I fell in love with his puppy self: the dread of the moment that snuffly breathing stops. This is my cue to throw myself forward, drop deeper into my affection for this ridiculous dog. Tomorrow I will let Cookie teach me to roll in the grass, to howl in ecstasy at the sight of good food. Of any food, actually. Woo-hoo! It's 2:30 a.m. Upstairs, my son, Adam, is dreaming dreams I'll never quite understand, because his brain is different from mine. Shortly before his birth, I learned that he has Down syndrome, which put mothering him well above skydiving in my Book of Fears. I yelled a lot during Adam's birth. Eighteen years later, I'm still yelling "Woo-hoo!" And so far, the only consequence of that particular plunge is love. Which takes me to my final point.

In Preparation for Landing
What I really panic about nowadays isn't falling; it's landing. But even that concern is fading, because I've realized there are only two possible landings for someone who embraces intimacy, and both are beautiful. The first possibility is that your beloved will love you back. Then you won't land; you'll just fall deeper into intimacy, together. This is how bald eagles prepare to mate—by locking talons and free-falling like rocks—which is deeply insane and makes me proud to call the eagle my country's national bird. The other possibility is that you'll throw yourself forward, yell "Woo-hoo!," and smash into rejection. Will it hurt? Indescribably. But if you still refuse to bury your broken heart, or force someone to "fix" it—if you just experience the crash landing in all its gory glory, you'll create a miracle. A Jewish friend told me this story: A man asks his rabbi, "Why does God write the law on our hearts? Why not in our hearts? It's the inside of my heart that needs God." The rabbi answered, "God never forces anything into a human heart. He writes the word on our hearts so that when our hearts break, God falls in." Whatever you hold sacred, you'll find that an unguarded broken heart is the ideal instrument for absorbing it. If you fall into intimacy without resistance, despite your alarm, either you will fall into love, which is exquisite, or love will fall into you, which is more exquisite still. Do it enough, and you may just lose your fear of falling. You'll get better at missing the ground, at keeping a crushed heart open so that love can find all the broken pieces. And the next time you feel that vertiginous sensation of the floor disappearing, even as your reflexes tell you to duck and grab, you'll hear an even deeper instinct saying, Fall in! Fall in!

I started to get close-minded right around the time I was suddenly unable to sleep in random places, requiring abed when traveling or staying with large groups of people. I'm so over the dating scene , and seasoned, that I'msure I know a girl's entire story/type before I actually meet her. Last time I made the mistake of bringing a female friend home (and keep in mind this was a female friend thateveryone knew I was not dating), my mom hijacked her with her plan to have a crab bake in the backyard for mywedding . Goodness. I don't even have a girlfriend! Many people ask me why I'm still single. It doesn't bother me: Iwon't mind turning into one of those eccentric harcore New Yorkers like Seinfeld 's Kramer. I Get Rusty
Now that I go longer between dates, and give fewer people a chance, my habits and "go-to" moves are rusty. Icould go on dates just to stay sharp , but that's not fair to either of us. There are fine points of dating thatchange with time that must be monitored closely. For example, I ask girls for advice about whether I should call ortext to meet up for a first date. I get: "Definitely call -- it shows you're serious about it." Or "Text, be casual." If I had an established dating method that remained sharp, I probably wouldn't run into these quandaries.
My Wing Men Are Disappearing
It's always fun, and more comfortable, having a group (or I should say pack ) of my buddies to hit the bars with. Itgives me more confidence. But my single-guy friends are slowly disappearing to girlfriends, married life ...and babies.
I'm Feeling the Pressure
I've had such bad luck in the past, and I rarely find anyone I'm attracted to. Fewer opportunities means morepressure when there's a rare chance after I actually meet someone interesting. Pressure throws off my game a bitand makes things uncomfortable.
I Can't Party Like I Used To
These days, I get drunk pretty fast, and my desire for late-night food is getting earlier and earlier in the evening.Then there are the nights I'm too tired to do anything but stay in and read Wikipedia, and check out HistoryChannel documentaries. And, when I do make it out, I'm often with couples who call it a night before I'm ready to.
I'm Getting Uglier While the Girls Remain Hot
By now I think I have a double chin -- well, maybe I'm just imagining it. These days I spend time looking in themirror, monitoring the progress of developing ugly features , like that double chin. Combine this with the fact that Icontinue to hit on younger girls in that just-out-of-college age range, and you have a total mismatch: a getting-uglier old (but not wealthy) guy hitting on a consistently cute population.

My buddy and I considered being Crockett and Tubbs from Miami Vice for Halloween. But then we thought: "If weare hitting on younger girls all night, are they even going to know what Miami Vice is?"

What started as a twinkle in Don Ross and the rest of the steering committee’s eye is starting to take shape.
With the hiring of architect Paul Raff, the centre for sustainable community development is coming ever closer to completion. Slated to be located in the former Textron building in Gananoque, Ross said this new development is going to be a centre of knowledge and activity that fosters the collaboration of organizations and agencies interested in sustainable development.
Paul Raff Studios has been hired to create a market and financial feasibility study and hear all interests to help create a vision for the centre.
“The Frontenac Arch Biosphere Network hosts at least 30 Web sites for organizations and we have about 15 organizations that use this as a meeting place,” Ross said last week.
He was sequestered in a small room at the back of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere office on the Thousand Islands Parkway. Two other meetings involving two other organizations were taking place at the same time, one upstairs and the other out front in the main room. “There are so many different organizations. We want a place for everyone. We have no space to do any storytelling.”
While plans for the centre are still very much in their infancy, Ross has definite ideas about what role the centre will play in the community. “We need to find a way to launch people onto the landscape and tell the story of the region. If the region was a pool, this new centre would be the diving board.”
The steering committee is comprised of spokespeople from 10 different organizations including FAB, Parks Canada, the Barbara Heck Foundation, the Thousand Islands Playhouse and several other organizations. It’s not a committee of council but, as council owns the building, the town is playing an active role in the centre’s development.
“Gananoque is the logical place to do this,” Ross said. “The Textron building is also good because the town owns it. Old factories will be part of the storyline.”
The mission statement is “to establish and manage a viable, creative, energetic hub from which a number of like-minded organizations provide programming and operations that generate and facilitate solutions to sustainable development challenges in the Frontenac Arch Biosphere area while demonstrating and promoting the concepts and benefits of such development on the environment, culture, society and economy of the region.”
Asked what the centre will look like, Ross said he has no idea, that’s up to the community. “We need a lot of input from the region and we won’t do this unless it’s financially feasible. It can’t be a drain on the taxbase.”
That said, Ross said the Lowertown Study will play a prominent role in the development of the centre and the building will also be one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in the province.“We are definitely going to take a public approach to this,” he added. “We can’t find anything like this in the world so it’s a brand new concept. It could be a starting place for regional tours. It can be a place where people ask questions. We also have the greatest concentration of artists in Canada so they will play a role.”
The final report from Paul Raff Studios will be presented to the public on Nov. 23 though a series of town hall meetings are being developed.
Once the dates are set, a meeting will be held in Brockville, Gananoque and an place in the western part of the FAB area.
“This should be nothing but a positive for local groups with a total focus on sustainable community development,” Ross said. “An overwhelming positive is the number of organizations this will help.”

Live well - recipe tasty and inexpensive

So there was this delicious dish my sisters and I used to make all the time but I've since lost the recipe! Not to fret because I've come up with a recipe close to it!

You'll need:

Rice (the 20 minute stuff, not that instant crap!) (MEDIUM Pot)
Ground meat: your choice. I like chicken for this (LARGE SKILLET)
Garlic Segment (KNIFE)
Can of diced tomatoes - the already Italian spiced ones are REALLY good in this recipe (CAN OPENER)
1 cup Mozza cheese shredded (CHEESE GRATER)

For strong garlic flavour add it later in the recipe
For mild garlic flavour add at the beginning

1.) Start the rice

2.) Brown the meat on medium heat. (turn heat down to low once browned.)

3.) Check the rice

4.) Grate the cheese

5.) Slice/dice the garlic - add to meat pan

6.) Rice should be almost done!

Perfect!!!

7.) Open the tomatoes dump them into rice pot

8.) let sit for 3-5 minutes.

9.) Add rice/tomatoes to pan with meat

10.) Top with Mozza; Turn heat up to 6-7; Bring to a simmer

11.) When the cheese has melted add salt and pepper/oregano if you so choose and serve!

It's inexpensive. Relatively healthy. And packs a flavourful punch! :)

There are some very cool perks I get to partake in as part of my job!

Apparently every year as a team building exercise my employers send the announcers out on the water for a little Aquatic Bonding.

Needless to say the experience: VERY COOL.

We got LOADS of exercise, learned more about one another, had fun and all suffered from exhaustion and soreness together the next day hahaha.

The staff of 1000 islands kayaking company were knowledgeable, light hearted and professional.

We learned a lot about the different Islands, rock formations, protected areas and secrets the 1000 islands hold (like half moon bay...toooooo freaking cool!)

Since the 1000 Islands Music Festival and some local shows have wrapped up I haven't heard a THING about the music scene in the area.
Our Music Intative group hasn't had a meeting this week, and I've missed a couple.
I do know of ONE music related article of interest......

The Thousand Islanders Chorus has kicked off the 38th year of celebrating a cappella harmony in Brockville and area.

MUSIC!! - 1000 Island music fest recap!

**Forgive me, heat stroke has set in and the batteries died on my recorder. There was a lot to absorb, but I remember quite a bit from my day in heaven!

Had an EPIC weekend!
Well Saturday! Packed more excitement into one day then I have all week!
Arrived at the festival around 12:30 my foot crossed the threshold of the gate and the sweet notes of St.Andrew's Bridge (Hello Beautiful) filled my ears!
Of course I leaped and bounded to the stage! "Hi Guys!!!" *waves*
The crowd was a little sparse at this point but absorbed the tunes like no ones business!
Sunshine and HAWT weather welcomed the concert goers.
A bunch of Booths were set up along the fence line.
Food, drink, merch and radio stations aplenty.
Wondered my way back stage to a beehive of activity it was a shock at first but assimilation wasn't far behind before I knew it I was dancing with Pat Roach (Randy - Trailer Park Boys) and brushing shoulders with artists like 'The Joys', ' Amanda Rheaume', 'illscarlet', 'Hello Beautiful', 'The Free Press', 'The Arkells' (out of Edmonton), 'Kardinal Official' and many more.

I wasn't so much as astonished by the humble-ness of these artists but by their ability to welcome me as a friend. Everyone was so nice! Everyone answered any questions I had about them and 'The Biz' and welcomed the casual conversation.

Imagine this...some of the most BEAUTIFUL guitars in the world sitting there BEGGING to be touched ACHING to be played.
*play me! play me!*

Eric Alper and Zoltan Varadi lead the way up to heaven.
"Do you want something to drink? Eat? Come on it, isn't this air conditioning AWESOME"
....Or something along those lines.
As we sipped away on soft drinks we chatted around the hour glass body table.
"HOW did you get into this business Eric?!"
Eric explained about being surrounded by music his entire life.
His Grandfather owned one of the hippest bars in Toronto...
somewhere in this conversation the term "music snob" arose to my amusement...I thought I was the only one who used that term! Music snobs unite! hahaha!
Eric engulfed himself in music he says "I couldn't play, I CAN'T play an instrument for the life of me but if anyone wanted a certain song they knew it was me to come to"

He started a record company then realized in order for his artists to play he'd need to promote them, that they needed all SORTS of things to make an artist flourish the snowball effect seemed to take place and an umbrella covered all the bases, keeping the artists out of the rain.

People started to take note in Eric's ability to Promote and was offered a job.
"How's this go down Eric?"
One of the Big wigs offered Eric a job and asked what his salary would be. Eric asked for "one copy of the CDs from every artist on the label" and just enough to basically cover his rent!
"YOU'RE INSANE" That was what Eric was told. Insane maybe not, risk taker? OH HELL YA! :D
"On any given day I was working with heavy metal, to urban, to pop to heavy metal again" vibrating with energy and enthusiasm Eric explained how the pieces of his career came together "Now I pick and choose and MAKE my day".

Old fret boards held up signed photo's and old ticket stubs from amazing concerts including ZZ Top's Casino Tour 2002.

Our chat ended abruptly but I was happy to have captured a few minutes of Eric's time and that I could help him find his phone haha!

As he scoured the hay field I poked my nose around to take in more and more awesome!
Amps built into the walls and MORE guitars.
The beds FILLED with guitars. There was at LEAST 16 guitars!

"SOUUUUUUUUUUL it's on your sleeeeeeeeeeeeEEEVE! SO-OOOUL it'll give you what you need!"

Awh 'The Joys'! Like comfort food for the soul.
These guys ROCKED it like nobody's business.
Most energy all day and THAT is saying a LOT.

Half way through the set Sarah invited Amanda Rheaume up on stage they did an exceptional version of Janis Joplin's 'Me and Bobby McGee'.
Then continued to finish off their set with thunderous energy and excitement!
Off stage they slowly worked their way out of the performing high. We chatted for a bit then the screaming started....

"La di dadi dah"
Snopp Dogg hit the stage. Full band, something you RARELY see in a rap artist's set and a refreshing change from the excessive use of air horns and DJ's.

'The Joys' are coming 'The Joys' are coming!

They'll be performing at The 1000 Islands Music Festival THIS Saturday August 15th... and I couldn't be more excited!

I had the pleasure of booking/meeting this energetic group of musicians about a year ago in Moncton. Their album 'Unfold' is powerful and moving! You can tell these guys are SERIOUS about their music.

Sarah was gracious enough to spare us a few moments of here precious time during 'The Joys' busy shedule!

MB: Have you played in the 1000 Islands Area Before?
SS: well...we've played the Belleville waterfront festival 2 years in a row, and have a played a few shows in Kingston. that's about as close as we've ever gotten. mike, our guitar player, grew up in the Napanee area, so i guess he'll be close to home...

MB: Any surprises in store for the 1000 Island Music Festival?
SS: nope - we're just gonna rock out the way we always do. no show is any more important than the next - although this one might be a bit BIGGER! we're pumped!

MB: What's been the best part of your summer so far?
SS: we've been writing new material for our 2nd album. our producer, dale penner (nickleback, holly macnarland, econoline crush), flew in from Winnipeg and we did a few days of pre-production at our rehearsal space. the music is really coming together - that's exiting!

MB: I read somewhere that The Joys are working on a new album. How's that going so far?
SS: ha. see above. but really...it is going awesome! the music is powerful; great energy...good vibes. we are going to Winnipeg in September to hopefully finish the recording process. we're expecting to have an early spring release.

MB: What can we expect from this album?
SS: high energy rock n roll!

MB: What's the next stop for The Joys?
SS: we'll be playing a few local show in September, then going to Winnipeg for recording, then a few stops in Kingston and Ottawa at the end of September, than another tour of west coast Canada. woo-hoo!

MB: What's your favorite thing to do when you aren't touring, performing and recording?
SS: i like walking my 2 golden retrievers, daisy and dallas, and hanging at home with my family. they make me very happy!

LIVE WELL - Cheap and Hearty meal ideas

Chicken *Mushroom Rice:

2 chicken breasts

1/2 - 1 Cup Rice

Can *Cream of Mushroom Soup

Cup Sharp Cheddar- Approx.

Cook the rice with a bit of butter and a splash of lemon juice. (rice takes about 20 minutes to cook)

Slice the breasts up and fry them in a tiny amount of oil in a saucepan.

When they're cooked through (and possibly even browned a bit), reduce heat, add can of *mushroom soup, and let sit.

Serve layered: Rice, chicken *mushroom mixture, top with cheese.

Makes four generous portions.

costs $0.88 a serving.

*if you don’t like mushroom you can sub in cream of broccoli, celery or cheese soup.

Chicken Curry Alfredo:

2 Chicken Breasts

2 Cups Penne

Jar Prepared Alfredo Sauce

Slice the chicken, saute it, add sauce, doctor with spices and most importantly add a heaping spoon of curry powder. Add to penne.

Serve.

$1.05 per serving.

Inexpensive Goulash - feeds 4 with leftovers for under $3

1/2 lb. hamburger

2 Cups elbow macaroni

1 1/2 to 2 cans tomato paste

garlic & onion powders

salt & pepper

Boil elbow macaroni & drain

Brown hamburger in a large skillet (so you can mix everything together in it afterwards.)

Season with a shake of garlic powder and a couple shakes of onion powder salt and pepper to taste. Drain the fat and add the tomato paste.

(You may want to thin the tomato paste by adding a splash of water)

Mix well with the hamburger.

Add the macaroni and some more salt and pepper.

Heat a few minutes. (Careful not to scorch the tomato paste.)

Take some of the guesswork out of the shopping search--use this list to find flour alternatives.

Potato Starch Flour This is a gluten-free thickening agent that is perfect for cream-based soups and sauces. Mix a little with water first, then substitute potato starch flour for flour in your recipe, but cut the amount in half. It can be purchased in a health food store.

Tapioca Flour This is a light, white, very smooth flour that comes from the cassava root. It makes baked goods impart a nice chewy taste. Use it in recipes where a chewy texture would be desirable. It would work nicely in bread recipes such as white bread or French bread. It is also easily combined with cornstarch and soy flour. It can be purchased in a health food store.

Soy Flour This nutty tasting flour has a high protein and fat content. It is best when used in combination with other flours and for baking brownies, or any baked goods with nuts or fruit. It can be purchased in a health food store.

Cornstarch This is a refined starch that comes from corn. It is mostly used as a clear thickening agent for puddings, fruit sauces and Asian cooking. It is also used in combination with other flours for baking. It can be purchased in a health food store.

Corn Flour This flour is milled from corn and can be blended with cornmeal to make cornbread or muffins. It is excellent for waffles or pancakes. It can be purchased in a health food store.

Cornmeal This is ground corn that comes from either yellow or white meal. This is often combined with flours for baking. It imparts a strong corn flavor that is delicious in pancakes, waffles, or simple white cakes. It can be purchased in a health food store.

White Rice Flour This is an excellent basic flour for gluten-free baking. It is milled from polished white rice. Because it has such a bland flavor, it is perfect for baking, as it doesn't impart any flavors. It works well with other flours. White rice flour is available in most health food stores, but also in Asian markets. At the Asian markets it is sold in different textures. The one that works the best is called fine textured white rice flour.

Brown Rice Flour This flour comes from unpolished brown rice. It has more food value because it contains bran. Use it in breads, muffins, and cookies. It can be purchased in a health food store.

Kamut and Spelt Flours These are ancient forms of wheat. While they aren't appropriate for gluten-free diets, they are excellent substitutes for plain wheat flour as they add wonderful flavor and consistency.

Substituting Gluten Wheat flour contains gluten, which keeps cookies, cakes and pies from getting crumbly and falling apart.

It is what makes baked goods have a good texture because it traps pockets of air. This creates a lovely airy quality that most baked goods possess when baked with traditional wheat flour.

In order to help retain this structure when using non-wheat flours, gluten substitutes must be added to a gluten-free flour mixture. For each cup of gluten-free flour mix, add at least 1 teaspoon of gluten substitute.

Here are three very good substitutes for gluten.
Xanthum Gum This comes from the dried cell coat of a microorganism called Zanthomonas campestris. It is formulated in a laboratory setting. This works well as a gluten substitution in yeast breads along with other baked goods. You can purchase it in health food stores.
Guar Gum This is a powder that comes from the seed of the plant Cyamopsis tetragonolobus. It is an excellent gluten substitute and it is available in health food stores.
Pre-gel Starch This is an acceptable gluten substitute. It helps keep baked goods from being too crumbly. This, too can be purchased at most health food stores.

Substitution is the solution
If you are ready to try some recipes, start with recipes that use relatively small amounts of wheat flour like brownies or pancakes. These turn out lovely and the difference in taste is minimal. Here are two gluten-free flour mixtures that are suitable for substituting wheat flour cup for cup.

Gluten-Free Flour Mixture 1
1/4 cup soy flour
1/4 cup tapioca flour
1/2 cup brown rice flour

Gluten-Free Flour Mixture 2
6 cups white rice flour
2 cups potato starch
1 cup tapioca flour

The above mixtures can be doubled or tripled. Another option is to purchase a gluten-free flour mixture at a health food store to avoid the guesswork involved in substitutions. This flour mixture can usually substitute wheat flour cup for cup, but read the package directions to be sure. Keep these flour mixtures stored in containers at room temperature and keep them on hand to simplify your baking routine.

ARTS - Brockville Ghost Walks

The Brockville Ghost Walks are back for a 13th season every Friday night - put on by friends of Fulford Place Museum.

During July it's the original 2 and a half hour walk for $14.

Tickets can also be purchased starting at 7:15 Friday nights at Fulford Place Mansion.

During July, Parks Canada is doing skits about the history of the St. Lawrence at the Mansion from 7:40 - 8:20 pm.

Starting August 7th, you can choose from the original walk for $14 and the Creepy King Street 90 minute walk for $10.50.

I LOVE taking part in yoga at the park!! Hardy Park every tuesday weather permitting. 6:30 - 7:30. Sadie Webster is a sweet heart. She teaches a gentle Yoga meant for everyone while in Hardy Park but is versed in all types. Best of all until August 24th yoga in the park is free courtesy of Black Dog Yoga. Sadie hopes to open a studio in downtown Brockville very SOON.

We want the music scene to stay alive. How do we do it? How do we achieve a thriving music scene? Lets start by asking some questions. Using our resources.

What it really comes down to is a few things - the media and how smart the bands/promoters are themselves and how much they really want to change things.

Every small-ish town has a problem - if there's 4 or less radio stations (and none of them play local music because of MDs not caring/no indie programming abilities), then people really have to start going online. I bet if I looked at various band's websites, a bunch wouldn't have an updated tour schedule, updated bio, photo, or even streaming or free downloading of songs. The key word is free. None of these bands should be worried at all about losing or making money, they should be worried about being ignored. Every single new band I've signed this year is giving away 3-5 songs every 4 months, and at the end of the year, if they have 20,000 or so downloads, then they make a physical CD. It's not my rule, but retail isn't going to give up shelf space to a band that doesn't have any fans - the band has to create the buzz themselves, and it's not by spamming people daily, but actually giving their fans a reason to keep coming back to the websites.

The high schools in the city are going to be the future for any arts area - is anyone targeting them? Having free shows? Creating a Facebook/Yahoo group for people to talk about music, who's coming, who they'd like to see, promo for bands, discounted tickets for them, all ages shows, Brockville blog/music scene page, half page editorial in the local papers, or indie spotlight on radio stations, etc.?

I find sometimes the promoters are the biggest meanies of all of it. They have this aura that the bands should be thankful for their existence, when really, it's the other way around. They charge $20 for 15 awful bands, cut corners, and put all the pressure on the bands to bring in the people, when really, it should be the promoters and audience and bands working together to just get as much information out there as possible. What usually happens is that all 3 groups of people are looking at one another going "it's your fault."

But the fact is, the Brockville Arts Centre do reasonable well, I would imagine. The Recorder can really step up a bit, as can Cogeco and Living In Brockville Magazine, but it's all about the audience, and I know - why should The Recorder give up a weekly column written by a music person other than the entertainment editor to cover indie artists who's audience don't read the paper, nor contribute to the advertising dollars? Because they bloody well should - there's The London Free Press, K/W Record and others that have high school or university students writing music sections every week, because the main music person covers the bigger acts.

But I think the answer is that with 4 High Schools, St Lawrence College, and a population of over 20,000, the audience pool is going to be pretty small to choose from anyway - maybe it's just a matter of having those cream of the crops bands fight it out for themselves. I truly believe that the first thing to go down the drain in any community/city/province/country are the arts. Kill that, depress that, ignore that, and you'll have an area waiting to be designated as a place where nobody wants to go or live.

So here I am trying to spike some life into the Brockville Music scene.
